Music for Life
It was said in ancient times, that Pythagoras had a seven note lyre that he would play the ascending notes of when he arose in the morning and the descending notes in the scale before he went to sleep at night.
He said he did this in order to 'tune' or 'recalibrate' his system with that of the cosmos. Matter itself is literally condensed energy and the atomic 'number' of the atoms of each element give them all their own unique frequency or 'vibration'. Therefore everything that exists quite literally has it's own natural resonance or 'harmonic'. Hence the art and science of music gives one a unique and direct access into the unseen realms or 'essence' of all things. It completely bypasses our intellectual and rational minds giving us a useful means of direct connection to the influences behind great art and music that caused them to be translated and expressed through human life in the first place. The Astral Light The following pieces of music are compositions derived from various researches and studies into certain environments and natural qualities. The key aim being toward making deeper and more direct connections with the 'unseen' dimensions of the natural worlds via the 'instrument' of one's own human system. |
Above: In ancient Egypt the audial sense – that is the direct response to the proportional laws of sound and form – was considered to be the true basis for philosophy and science. Hence the blind harpist, whose wisdom comes not from the visual world of outer appearance but from the inner vision of metaphysical law. |

The Geometry of SoundThis clip shows an amazing correlation between form and sound. A range of sound frequencies are being transmitted through a droplet of water. As each 'note' shifts in pitch we see a corresponding change in the geometric patterns appearing within the medium of the water molecules.
Not only do we see a distinctive sequence of precise geometric shapes appearing during this process, but we also see the interesting phenomena of the higher frequencies causing the most geometrically complex patterns. The Symbolist key to Egypt |
Slowing down
Research has shown that when listening to music, our heart rate will very quickly try to adjust itself to match the dominant 'beat' of the music we are listening to. Contemporary and popular music styles are often in the 100 to 120 bpm range and cause our heart rate to speed up, which is exciting but moves us away from our quieter, more intuitive state. The following 3 tracks have been composed around the pace of 24 beats per minute and feature the natural sounds of the human voice and nature. They have the effect of slowing down ones heart rate and inner state which is a useful and practical process towards 'tuning' oneself towards being in a more suitable frame of mind for intuitive and contemplative studies. Introducing your Aura
1. Orbiting Earth
Imagine orbiting above the earth, gliding smoothly above the vast expanse of cloud and ocean with the on board transmitting beacon pulsing out its signal at a steady 24 beats per minute. Everything slows right down, breathing, heart rate, thoughts... while one starts to get the feeling of being part of a much greater web of life.

2. Temple Harmonics
3. Crystal Cave Journey
In New Zealand there are many naturally formed underground limestone caves with flowing rivers that penetrate deep beneath the earths surface bringing one into the presence of the 'elemental' forces of the earth and the crystalline structures of the subterranean worlds that create mysterious and deeply tranquil atmospheres.

Essence of Place
Like a person, each natural environment on earth has its own distinctive 'essence' or 'character' that is a result of not only its material properties, but also the combination of its unique history, influences and elemental natures. This is more often than not the very thing that artists, poets and writers attempt to encapsulate in their work. However, music being a medium based in rhythm, frequency, sound, vibration and harmony, and therefore closer in nature to the unseen character of a particular place lends itself particularly well to the art of capturing the 'Essence of Place'. The following tracks are researches and experiments in capturing the inherent 'essence' of some of the favourite and special places in my life.
4. Karekare Beach
The invigorating smell of the salty sea air, the roar of the surf, waves crashing over your bare feet, not another soul in sight, the hot sun beating down on your skin, the intense warm glow of a revitalized inner well being, a sense of being a part of nature, all stresses and worries washed away as if they had never been...this is Karekare beach on Auckland's West Coast!
|
5. Waitekauri Campfire
A clear starlit night, crickets chirping, the smell of wood smoke, a guitar playing gently in the background, fond memories of child hood, the heartbeat of the universe itself pulsing in the background, the glistening stars of the Milky Way passing silently overhead. Conversations gently turn to pondering the great mystery of it all and deep, profound inner feelings once again return.

6. Lake Rotoma
Each of the 11 lakes in Rotorua has its own distinctive nature and properties. Lake Rotoma is very 'cleansing' and the quality of it's water causes one's skin and hair to become softer than usual. The lake is very deep and has a number of even deeper springs beneath it. What began as a soft melody expressing the nature of the lake soon developed into what felt like a 'call and response' between the entity of the lake and the musician.

Essence Qualities
Although the materialist scientists will probably argue for all eternity that there is nothing above the primacy of matter, it is clear to most normal, thinking, feeling people that we humans are heavily influenced by the unseen and immaterial worlds. The seasons, the weather, the 'mood' of the group, the contagious inspiration of another, the unseen 'presence' of history at battle sites, the 'atmosphere' of a museum, a lively party or a sad funeral – all of these things, and many more affect how we feel, think and behave. Much derided in modern times, wiser people of the past, placed great value upon the gathering and building of certain inner influences or 'qualities' such as patience, care, respect, devotion and belief for example. It was seen that these inner qualities of character influenced others around them and promoted the best of what a human could be, rather than the worst.
The following pieces of music are the result of contemplations into the nature of some of these 'life enhancing' qualities of being.

7. Defiance
There is an ancient saying that "You lean against that which resists you" and in life there are 'storms' of circumstance that come to prevent and take away. However as with the storms in nature they cannot last for ever and will eventually pass. Hence one sometime needs a firm inner defiance to 'dig deep' and not be swayed by whatever difficulties life throws at us.
|
8. Waiting
A quality or state of being most definitely not in vogue in our fast paced modern world is that of simply 'waiting'. It is our brain that gets bored and restless in the absence of incessant stimulus and distraction, whereas there are other, deeper 'lives' within as that long for peace and quiet and would urge us to simply slow down, be still and wait. "Wait for what?" one might well ask. Well that's the whole point, you won't know until you have waited long enough for it to arrive.

9. The Quiet Joy
Once upon a time most peoples lives were a lot simpler. No one had much in the way of material possessions. To gather together in the evening after a long day of back breaking work, to have enough to eat for dinner and to also have shelter, good health and a roof over ones head produced a sentiment of gratefulness and good fortune. Hence the deeply moving state of the simple joy of being alive and not alone.

10. River of Life
Gurdjieff told a lovely story about how his father, no matter what misfortunes and difficulties befell him, never let it disturb his inner life. He was ready to reconcile himself to anything provided there was bread and quiet during his established time for meditation. What displeased him most was to be disturbed in the evening when he would sit out in the open looking up at the stars. The river of life is eternal.

Astrology
Although mainstream historians claim that the Zodiac originated with the Chaldeans and was later refined and developed to its present form by the Greeks, the truth is that no one really knows where it came from originally. The fact that the Chaldeans, Phœnicians, Egyptians, Persians, Hindus, Hebrews and Chinese all had zodiacs that were much alike in general character further indicates that the knowledge and esoteric symbology of the zodiac originated as part and parcel of a mysterious ‘seed’ cosmology given to our ancestors in a remote previous age. Deeper, esoteric wisdom holds that the astrological natures of Aries, Taurus, Gemini etc, rather than being caused by the position and stars at the time of ones birth are more to do with the 12 human 'types' that nature prints each human with at the time of the year in the seasonal cycle they are born into. The following 4 tracks are from a research into capturing the nature and frequency of 4 of these astrological 'types'. Having known and lived with these 'types' for most of my life, their overall nature and 'essence' have become unmistakable.

11. Gemini - The Mercurial Way
Up, down, left and right, off and on, day and night...such is the constant, ceaseless, interplay of the theatre of opposites, as in the constant mercurial actions of impulses dancing through our nerves, Gemini is the universal archetype of networks, communication, exchange and mental awareness. No wonder they are so at ease with constant change and new ideas!
|
12. Cancer - Memory
All the Cancerians in my life have amazing memories and a love of history and ancient things. This track focuses on the Cancerian qualities of memory and emotion, two very strong features of their nature. They say home is where the heart is, and in the later years of a persons life, memory, value and sentiment become the 'heart' of ones culminating life experience, like the final stages of a rich symphony.
|
13. Pisces - The Dissolution
Whatever one thinks of death, it is certainly a drastic transformation from one state into another. In the Egyptian and Tibetan Books of the Dead, clear and precise instructions are given to a person before this transition, to prepare their mind for the series of shocks and tests that they are about to attempt to pass through. Pisces as the 12th universal archetype represents this 'transition' or 'metamorphosis' from earthly, carnal existence into the next realm.
|
14. Taurus - Earthed in Nature
Solid, dependable, deep feelings, salt of the earth, a love of nature and of the best quality in material surroundings... Taureans can carry a certain sensual down to earthness that can make one reassess a lofty philosophical idea in terms of what its true usefulness in improving the quality of life actually is! "Slow down and take time to smell the roses". Yes its a cliche now, but it was probably given as wise counsel by a thoughtful Taurean somewhere out there!

Space Weather Music
In 1995 a Russian scientist, Dr. Alexy N. Dmitriev–who heads the Russian National Academy of Science–published a paper entitled “Planetophysical state of the Earth and Life” which so far has been entirely dismissed by Scientific and Academic bodies in the West. He introduces his paper by declaring: “Current Planetophysical alterations of the Earth are becoming irreversible. Strong evidence exists that these transformations are being caused by highly charged material and energetic non-uniformity’s in interstellar space which has broken into the interplanetary area of our Solar System.
This “donation” of energy is producing hybrid processes and excited energy states in all the planets, as well as the Sun. Effects here on Earth are to be found in the acceleration of the magnetic pole shift, in the vertical and horizontal ozone content distribution, and in the increased frequency and magnitude of significant catastrophic climatic events. It is only through a deep understanding of the fundamental changes taking place in the natural environment surrounding us that politicians, and citizens alike, will be able to achieve balance with the renewing flow of PlanetoPhysical states and processes”.
What he is saying–and goes on to extrapolate in great detail–with page after page of new scientific data and examples–is that all the dramatic changes currently happening on earth, from the unprecedented rates of natural disasters, to the failure and breakdown of long established social systems, ecological deterioration, illness, disease and even climate change–are all attributed to the massive increase of energy now flowing into our solar system from the more highly charged galactic energy zone we have recently entered into.
From unexpected changes in the nature of the Sun’s radiation effecting the composition of matter on earth, to the doubling of the intensity of Jupiter’s magnetic field, to a far denser Martian atmosphere than expected, to the migration of Neptune’s Dark Spot and bright Aurorae appearing on Saturn’s poles–Dmitriev lists numerous instances of how the solar system is currently beset with a multitude of unprecedented state changes–almost like a teenager going through puberty!
What is also interesting about this new understanding of how the 'weather' of local and distant space effects us, is that in many ways it is also pointing toward the fact that ancient astro-theology as a foundation of all the worlds religions, was based in very real experiences by humans of solar and interstellar influences upon them. Once again, were the ancients so 'primitive' after all?
The following compositions were born out of a series of rather strange and curious feelings and impressions that seemed to be directly associated with certain space weather events, particularly around 2010, and through 2011 into 2012.
Prometheus Unleashed? The Uranus-Pluto squares of 2012- 2015 and Gurdjieff, the Ray of Creation and Immortality

15. Southern Cross - The Calling
On a very clear, summer, starlit evening I was outdoors gazing up at the Southern Cross constellation overhead. I had only been doing that for around 10 mins when it felt like my chest suddenly filled up with an intense impression of something that had 'shot down' from the star cluster itself. I immediately rushed inside to get that impression down into a piece of music while it was still fresh in my mind.

16. The Sun - Plasma Terminal
Recent surveys show that around 10% of the worlds population are effected by solar flares and CME's which can hit the earths upper atmosphere with such intensity that it knocks out various satellite and radio communication systems. For some it effects their emotions in a negative way causing depression and anxiety, whereas others report feeling brighter and more energized. The following track uses some of the actual sounds of the 'static' interference caused by these emissions and also explosive 'thunder' sounds to create an impression of these coronal 'explosions'.

17. Saturn - The Reaper
Astrologically and mythologically, Saturn represents the universal archetype of the 'Reaper'-the cold, dispassionate 'Father time' that comes to harvest and take away. Composed during a particularly strong Saturn conjunction in 2011, this piece attempts to capture something of the nature of the cold, hard reality of the reaper that comes when one's 'time' is up.

18. Pulsar Star - The March of Time
Pulsar stars, as they spin, emit a radiation that can actually be picked up and recorded as sound. The 'beat' on this track is the emission from the star Vela. Listening to the pulse of Vela somehow caused a sense of the 'march of time'. Relentless, persistent, impersonal. After all, the 70 odd years of a human life is really just a tiny, fleeting spark of time isn't it?
